Aerospike Secures $32 Million Series D To Further Grow Its High-Scale NoSQL Database Platform /startups/aerospike-secures-32-million-series-d-to-further-grow-its-high-scale-nosql-database-platform/ Mon, 18 Nov 2019 17:10:45 +0000 http://news.crunchbase.com/?p=22466 Imagine for a moment that you鈥檙e making a credit card transaction. This prompts a lot of questions from the payment processor before it accepts your payment. Where are you? How much are you spending? Are you using a PIN or a signature to validate the transaction? What merchant are you transacting with? How many times have you been to this place before? How do any of the facts from this particular transaction line up with the transactions you鈥檝e made in the past?

Subscribe to the 小蓝视频色情网页版 Daily

The answers to these questions, among others, indicate whether you are who you say you are. That you are at least probably not engaging in fraud as you spend a little too much on that latte.

These questions are posed in the form of database queries, and the final answer needs to come quickly. That鈥檚 the case with credit card transaction processing, real-time advertising auctions, content personalization, curated ecommerce recommendations, and many other situations. For these use cases and others, low latency and high throughput are key characteristics technical teams need to optimize for when choosing a database.

is the Silicon Valley-based startup behind , a hardware-optimized, in-memory NoSQL database solution designed for very large scale and very fast response times. In other words, for use cases where a lot of data questions need to be answered really quickly, Aerospike might be the right solution.

Today, the company that it鈥檚 raised $32 million in Series D funding led by . Existing investors , , and participated in the round. This deal brings Aerospike鈥檚 total venture backing to $78 million, according to the company.

As a condition of the deal, Triangle Peak Partners鈥 co-founding partner and NewView Capital operating partner will join Aerospike鈥檚 board of directors. Valuation and other terms of the transaction were not disclosed by the company.

鈥淒ata is the new [intellectual property],鈥 said Aerospike CEO John Dillon on a phone call with 小蓝视频色情网页版 News. 鈥淚f you鈥檙e able to extract insights from that data, you can make it actionable. When someone shows up, you can decide what the next best thing to do is.鈥 The need for high-speed databases capable of handling low-latency queries into petabyte-scale data was first felt by the online advertising industry over a decade ago, Dillon said, but now there鈥檚 demand across multiple sectors ranging from financial services and telephony to media and ecommerce.

According to Dillon, Aerospike excels where other database solutions fall down. Legacy database solutions either can鈥檛 scale to meet customer needs, or they cost too much to operate, Dillon said. Aerospike鈥檚 commercial product of Verizon Media, furniture and home goods retailer Wayfair鈥檚 recommendation engine, as well as other components of services provided by the likes of , , , and . Its open source community version is used by developers around the world for tinkering, research, and commercial projects alike.

The company says it鈥檚 been growing its revenue 50 percent year-over-year and has a customer retention rate of over 95 percent.

Aerospike intends to use its fresh funding to expand its geographic footprint, specifically into the Asia-Pacific region. The company has kept a fairly low profile, up to this point, said Dillon. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 know if we鈥檙e going to put a billboard up on the 101,鈥 the main arterial highway threading through Silicon Valley, but the company does plan to ramp up its sales and marketing teams with the help of this new financing.

Airtable Raises $100M To Build A Platform One Block At A Time /venture/airtable-raises-100m-to-build-a-platform-one-block-at-a-time/ Thu, 15 Nov 2018 11:00:49 +0000 http://news.crunchbase.com/?p=16342 The foundation of the web is built on the power of databases and the ability to manipulate data within them. But few database providers offer an experience that is as accessible, and now as well-funded, as .

Follow 小蓝视频色情网页版 News on

The SF-based startup has raised $100M, bringing its total known funding to $170M. And with the check comes a mission beyond rows and columns in a spreadsheet: an aim to democratize software.

, Airtable鈥檚 CEO and co-founder, told 小蓝视频色情网页版 News that his startup aims to take 鈥渁ll of the complexities of interacting with a relational database and exposing those to an end-user in the most intuitive possible form.鈥 Essentially, Liu is saying that if you can grok Excel, you should be able to grok Airtable.

However, manipulating that data into a product or useful piece of software mostly remains in the domain of developers. That doesn鈥檛 mean some companies haven鈥檛 tried making building apps on top of databases easier. , which automates workflows for hundreds of SMBs across the nation, also boasts about its ability to make software creation accessible to end users. But according to Liu, Quickbase and other drag-and-drop software creation tools are more 鈥渓ow-code app platforms that are frankly never going to see bottoms-up adoption.鈥

鈥淚f you showed Quickbase to twenty randomly selected people from a company or a cross-section of America, I think zero out of twenty, more times than not, would be able to go or want to go build the application they need on top of Quickbase,鈥 Liu explained, crediting Airtable鈥檚 more considered approach to product development as a big part of its differentiation from more established players.

Furthermore, Liu doesn鈥檛 believe that an injection of cash dwarfing all of its prior total funding rounds will impact the company鈥檚 ability to execute on new, user-friendly features.

鈥淲e were deliberate about thinking through who are the right people to involve at this stage to help us scale to the next five levels of the company,鈥 Liu explained. That said, investors do like cash as much as they like great products. And on revenue metrics, Liu said that the company is 鈥渇ortunate enough to be in a position where, reduced to those numbers, we look very good as a business.鈥

Assuming that Airtable chose the right investors, a solid financial footing paired with an influx of cash should give the startup room to explore its software creation ambitions. It plans to do so by investing more resources into 鈥淏locks,鈥 which are essentially mini-apps within Airtable, and opening up the platform to 鈥渢hird-party developers and customers.鈥

It鈥檚 an ambition that鈥檚 fraught with potential problems. One only need look at the list of poorly maintained Google Doc Add-ons and Twitter鈥檚 lackluster handling of over the years to understand the potential perils, and responsibility, of calling yourself a platform. But the use of the buzzword isn鈥檛 lost on Liu.

鈥淣ot all platforms are created equal. It鈥檚 kind of in-vogue to call yourself or something a platform because it sounds more ambitious, more empowering, and more important to do than build a product,鈥 said Liu.

Even without third-party developers, Airtable plans to commit internal resources to its Blocks platform, likely an encouraging sign for developers.

鈥淲e’re going to have a full-time team鈥 to go and just build useful blocks on top of our own platform,鈥 said Liu.

To this writer, in many ways, Airtable is attempting to create a new economy of app development built off of its accessible database. It鈥檚 a tall order that will require millions, and this is the bull market to raise it in.

NoSQL Database Company ScyllaDB Raises $10 Million Series C Led By TLV Partners /startups/nosql-database-company-scylladb-raises-10-million-series-c-led-tlv-partners/ Wed, 25 Apr 2018 11:01:38 +0000 http://news.crunchbase.com/?post_type=news&p=13746 Behind almost every piece of software that you use, there is at least one database system to store and retrieve the information you need. And demand for ever more specialized and performant data storage has increased.

, a Tel Aviv-based company that develops and supports a database of the same name, announced that it has closed a $10 million Series C funding round led by . Prior investors like , , , and participated in the round. , managing partner of TLV Partners, will be joining the company鈥檚 board.

The company was founded by and . Both co-founders worked together at a company called which was later . At Qumranet and later at Red Hat, Kivity worked as the lead maintainer for the (KVM). Laor was a manager of the KVM project and briefly served as Red Hat鈥檚 director of platform virtualization before both he and Kivity left in late 2012 to start OSv. OSv developed the cloud computing operating system OSv, and the server-side application framework . The company rebranded to ScyllaDB in 2015.

To date, including this most recent round of funding, the company has raised .

The Technology

When working with large datasets, especially in cases where speed is critically important, it鈥檚 important to use a database that delivers high throughput with low latency. In other words: use a system that can move a lot of stuff very quickly.

ScyllaDB is an open-source NoSQL database that can serve as a drop-in replacement for . Cassandra bills itself as a distributed, high-performance, and scalable NoSQL database. A NoSQL database allows software engineers to input, store, and read data that doesn鈥檛 fit into traditional tabular formats used in databases like MySQL or PostgreSQL.

According to the company, it can deliver performance of one million input-output operations per second (IOPS) per node, can scale out to hundreds of nodes, and has a 99 percent tail latency of less than one millisecond.

“Beyond its distinct performance advantages, Scylla is unique in its ability to fully exploit available hardware resources, leading to a dramatic reduction in [total cost of ownership],” Shahar Tzafrir said in a statement.

So what makes ScyllaDB so fast, at least when compared to Cassandra? ScyllaDB does away with Java and the performance limitations of the JVM. Instead, ScyllaDB uses , an open-source C++ framework developed by ScyllaDB鈥檚 team for building high-performance server-side applications. Using Seastar, ScyllaDB shards processing requests across multiple engines, each running its own memory and network interface controller on individual CPU cores.

These close-to-the-hardware improvements deliver higher scalability and stability, and lower latency compared to Cassandra and other NoSQL database solutions.

The Market

According to , an information resource covering relational and NoSQL databases, Cassandra is the eighth most popular database system worldwide as of February 2018.

ScyllaDB boasts full compatibility with Cassandra, but it鈥檚 been used by companies with other needs. Extant implementations of ScyllaDB involve it being used for key-value storage, time series databases, large blob storage, and as a backend to graph databases, among other applications.

Shahar Tzafrir said in a statement that customers using Cassandra, Hbase, MongoDB, Redis, and even MySQL are switching to ScyllaDB. ScyllaDB鈥檚 current users include AppNexus, AdGear, CERN, Discord, IBM, Nauto, Ola Cabs, Samsung, and Ytel.

In addition to its open source offering, ScyllaDB offers an enterprise version as well. CEO Dor Laor said in a statement that “later this year we will launch our database-as-a-service offering as the next logical step for our high-performance NoSQL database.”
